The compound is practically insoluble in water (0.642 mg/L at 25°C). This property is crucial for the rain resistance of horticultural formulations. However, it dissolves in mineral acids.

In acidic soil (pH 4–6), the compound slowly releases iron and phosphate ions, acting as a natural fertilizer. In alkaline soil (pH >7), it remains in an insoluble form. The compound is not biodegradable but is non-toxic to soil microorganisms.
