You go out to your garden bed in the morning and see lettuce with holes in it, and slime trails on the ground. Snails were here last night. Iron phosphate for snails is a proven solution to this problem: an effective molluscicide that is also a much safer alternative than metaldehyde-based products. What is iron phosphate and how does it affect snails?
Iron phosphate (chemical formula FePO₄, CAS number: 10045-86-0) is a poorly soluble, inorganic compound of iron and phosphoric acid. Thanks to its low solubility, it remains stable during storage and transport. In molluscicides, it is used in a specially developed formulation that ensures effective uptake by snails. It is the active ingredient in registered molluscicide granules, such as Ferramol.
FePO₄ granules contain attractants and nutrients that make it easier for snails to consume them. After ingesting the granules, physiological processes in the digestive tract are disrupted, causing the snails to stop feeding quickly. Thesnails retreat to their hiding places, usually under leaves or a rock, where they die. This is why you don’t see dead snails lying on the garden bed after treatment—the absence of bodies on the surface is a characteristic of FePO₄-based products, not a sign that the granules didn’t work.
Snails belong to the phylum Mollusca (Mollusca). Iron phosphate-based products are effective against most species of snails that are crop pests, including both naked (shell-less) snails, such as Arion vulgaris and Deroceras reticulatum, and snails with shells. Iron phosphate is approved as an active ingredient in molluscicides within the EU.

Why are iron phosphate preparations safe for humans, animals, and the environment?
One of the arguments supporting its favorable safety profile is the fact that iron phosphate is also approved as a food additive (E585), although its use in food and plant protection products is subject to separate regulations.
For non-target organisms, this substance is characterized by very low toxicity:
- humans and children
- dogs and cats
- birds and hedgehogs
- earthworms and beneficial soil insects
- bees and pollinators
After application, iron phosphate gradually enters the natural nutrient cycle in the soil. It does not tend to bioaccumulate and, when used properly, poses no threat to the environment.
In organic farming, plant protection products containing iron phosphate may be used if they meet the requirements of EU Regulation No. 848/2018.
Are blue slug pellets harmful to humans?
Blue snail pellets contain metaldehyde—a synthetic molluscicide that is toxic to vertebrates (dogs, cats, birds). The approval of metaldehyde as an active ingredient was not renewed in the EU under EC Regulation 2019/168, which ended its use in plant protection products as of March 31, 2021. Granules containing iron phosphate may be brown, green, beige, or gray—this depends on the product manufacturer, not on FePO₄ itself. FePO₄ and metaldehyde are two completely different active ingredients: check the ingredients on the label before purchasing.
Iron Phosphate vs. Metaldehyde – Why Choose FePO₄?
For years, metaldehyde was the standard for protecting crops against slugs. It is effective but toxic to dogs, cats, birds, and amphibians. Pursuant to EC Regulation 2019/168, the approval for metaldehyde was not renewed, ending its use in plant protection products in the EU as of March 31, 2021.

How to Use Iron Phosphate Products? Dosage and Application
Spread the iron phosphate granules directly onto the soil between plants to control snails that feed at night and at dusk. Apply the granules by hand or with an applicator.
Dosage: Follow the instructions on the label of the specific product. The dosage depends on the registered plant protection product, not on FePO₄ itself.
Application time: in the evening or before expected rainfall. Snails feed at night and on humid days, which increases their activity and contact with the granules.
Where to use: vegetable beds, strawberries, herbs, flower beds, plastic tunnels, greenhouses, and home gardens.
Waiting period and duration of effectiveness: check the label of the specific product—these parameters depend on the particular registered pesticide. Some products claim to be effective for up to 14 days under cover (tunnels, greenhouses).
Granules after rain: most FePO₄ products remain effective after rainfall, according to the manufacturer’s declaration for the specific product. Always check the information on the label.
When does iron phosphate work best?
Snails are most active during two periods: early spring (when snails first emerge after winter as soil temperatures rise) and early fall (August–September, when snails lay eggs in the soil). Treating during these two periods provides the best protection for crops.
Iron Phosphate in Organic Farming – Certification and Regulations
If you operate an ECO-certified farm or are applying for certification, plant protection products containing iron phosphate may be used in organic production in accordance with applicable regulations, provided they have the appropriate authorization.
Legal basis:
- Regulation (EC) No. 1107/2009 – registration of active ingredients in plant protection products in the EU. Iron phosphate is approved as an active ingredient in molluscicides.
- EU Regulation No. 848/2018 – organic farming. FePO₄ is included on the list of substances authorized for use in organic production.
Practical note: Only plant protection products containing iron phosphate and meeting regulatory requirements are permitted—not just any FePO₄ raw material. Only plant protection products with a current authorization from the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development may be legally used. Check the label and authorization number before use.
